Prophecy and Pottery:
Journey with Jeremiah
Please join me for a 6-week Bible Study on the book of Jeremiah, Wednesdays at 1 PM beginning on June 10th.
Each session is 40 minutes long and each class stands on its own, meaning you can attend all or any ; )
Please share this with others, even if they are not connected to CCUMC. There is a post on fb that can be shared and this email can be forwarded as well. Thanks!
This study will coincide with the sermon series beginning June 14th by the same name. I encourage you to begin finding out everything you can about Jeremiah and the time he was ministering to the people of Judah. If you can, read the entire book.
The overall synopsis for the study is this: Heartache, displacement, violence, helplessness, and homesickness are part of the ongoing human story. Our faith story invites us to deal openly and honestly with these things, helping us to remember the presence of God and the hope of a better future. We will journey with the prophet Jeremiah during a time of exile in this worship series and encounter the familiar imagery of God as the Potter who can reshape and remake us, making us vessels of living water ready for a brighter tomorrow.
Below is a brief lesson plan. Please note that I will add questions for reflection each week.
Week 1 - Read Jeremiah 1
Using your study Bible, learn what you can about who Jeremiah was and the context of the times in which he was prophesying?
Read Jeremiah 1:1-3
Questions to ponder:
Where is Anathoth and why is it important?
What and where is the territory of Benjamin? Who was King Josiah and why was he important? (cf. Josiah's reform in 2 Kings 22:1 - 23:20.
How long was Jeremiah a prophet?
What significant historical events occurred during Jeremiah's life?
Read Jeremiah 1:4-19 - Jeremiah's call and appointment to prophesy
What do you find unique about Jeremiah's call story?
What other call stories of prophets do you recall?
